A boy with a straw hat sets out to find a crew. Four strangers with their own debts and dreams decide to sail with him.
Every promise the crew keeps later is made here first: to Shanks, to a village, to each other.
A boy promises Shanks he will become a great pirate, then asks four strangers to believe it too. Everything he does afterward is that promise being kept.
Tied to a post in Shells Town, he agrees to follow a stranger on one condition: nothing comes between him and becoming the world’s greatest swordsman. After losing to Mihawk, he swears to Luffy he will never lose again.

He owes his life to the man who starved to feed him, and has stayed on a floating restaurant to repay it. Zeff sends him to sea to find the All Blue.
Go back to the beginning: the captain signs himself Monkey D. Luffy, and the Pirate King whose execution opens the story carried the same initial. Nobody here remarks on it.
Roger’s last words at his execution send a generation to sea after his treasure. Luffy stands on the same scaffold at Loguetown and laughs.
That promise travels with him.
